About the Lusong Gunboat Wreck

The Lusong Gunboat is one of the most accessible and popular snorkeling and shallow diving sites in Coron Bay, Palawan. Resting on its side at a gentle angle in just 5–10 meters of water, the wreck is ideal for beginners, freedivers, snorkelers, and underwater photographers. Located at the southern tip of Lusong Island, the gunboat is approximately 25 meters long, with parts of its stern visible at low tide. Its shallow depth allows even snorkelers to get a clear view of the wreck, which is now home to colorful corals and marine life. This vessel is one of the twelve Japanese auxiliary ships or submarine chasers sunk during the U.S. air raid on September 24, 1944. Over time, the Lusong Gunboat has transformed into a vibrant artificial reef and a favorite stop for both dive tours and island-hopping trips. As you descend, you'll be greeted by a large hull draped in soft and hard corals, sponges, and barnacles. The wreck shelters a wide variety of marine life including parrotfish, lionfish, damselfish, stonefish, and colorful nudibranchs. On calm days, visibility is excellent, making it an easy and relaxing dive. While the wreck is relatively small, it offers limited areas that can be safely entered by divers, making it an interesting site for casual wreck exploration and photography. Many visitors enjoy floating above the structure or relaxing between dives while observing the thriving reef life.

What Makes It Special

Unlike deeper wrecks, the Lusong Gunboat Wreck is bathed in sunlight, creating a stunning underwater scene. Its shallow location allows snorkelers to enjoy a close-up view of the wreck without diving equipment. The ship is now a thriving reef, home to colorful corals, anemones, and schools of fish. This wreck combines history, accessibility, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit site.
